Education & Outreach: Teacher Tools  

Litter-free Long Beach provides four teacher tools designed to support existing lesson plans and California Content Standards. These tools convey a quick message about the importance of keeping schools litter-free. Use them to support your lessons, or to introduce students to the concept of litter awareness before “Lunch with a Lizard” visits your school.

“Sea” shapes (grades K and 1)
This activity asks students to identify the shapes that can be seen in different sea creatures, paste the shapes to a page and write one sentence that describes a fact about each creature. Teacher’s can follow up the activity with a brief lesson about how litter affects our ocean environment.

Litter Letters (grades 2 and 3)

This activity asks students to write a letter to Mr. Scales, Long Beach ’s litter-free lizard. Students learn how to structure an informal letter that includes the date, proper salutation, body, closing, and signature.

Mail letters to:

Each student will receive a response from Mr. Scales within three weeks after receipt of a letters.

The wonder of water (grade 3)
This is a simple diagram that shows the Earth’s water cycle including energy, matter, and evaporation. Download and print as an overhead to support your water cycle lesson. Follow up with a brief lesson about how litter travels with rainfall and through stormdrains.
